Old fuse boards and undersized distribution equipment struggle with modern farm loads, RCD requirements and surge protection expectations. Upgrading boards at the farmhouse, farm office or key outbuildings improves safety, fault clarity and capacity for future circuits.

When an upgrade makes sense

Signs include frequent nuisance tripping, no room for new circuits, obsolete fuse types, lack of RCD protection where required, or damage and corrosion. An EICR often flags distribution issues that should be addressed.

Agricultural loads and discrimination

Farm distribution may combine single- and three-phase supplies, sub-mains to outbuildings, and circuits for motors and fixed equipment. Boards must be correctly rated, with appropriate devices so a fault on one circuit does not unnecessarily shut down critical systems where design allows.

Documentation and handover

After upgrade you should receive updated circuit schedules, test results and certification. This supports insurance, future alterations and your next inspection.
